A group of Liberal Democrats from South Dorset made their way to Taunton last weekend to attend the Regional Conference.

Amongst the attractions were speeches by Party Leader Nick Clegg, our newly-elected President, Ros Scott, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Huhne and Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor and , Vince Cable. The Conference also saw the launch of the European election campaign. Parliamentary Candidate, Ros Kayes spoke to support a motion to set up a party Commission for Rural Poverty in the South West, saying:

"Labour hasn't done it because they don't care about rural areas, the Tories won't do it because they don't care about people on low incomes. It's up to us to come up with innovative solutions to poverty in rural areas, whether through redeveloping the skills base of the working population, ensuring better transport networks to enable travel of goods & people or encouraging business through facilities like adequate broadband connection . But to draw down funding we need evidence. That's the purpose of this commission & why I urge Conference to support it.
