Graham Oakes and the South Dorset Liberal Democrats are backing a local councillor's campaign to restrict the sales of dangerous weapons.
Cllr. Brian Ellis is trying to persuade councils across Britain to support his campaign to restrict the sales of swords and daggers.
Cllr Ellis commented: "We live in an increasingly violent society, swords and knives are common currency, one thing we can do is restrict the availability of such weapons, and the regulations are lax and should be addressed. We hope that with local support we will be able to demonstrate to other councillors across the nation that this is a worthwhile campaign and to seek changes that will lead to a safer society for all".
Graham Oakes pledged his support for the campaign.
"Following the horrific attack on Nigel Jones M.P. and the death of this aide I am appalled to find out how easy it is to buy similar weapons in shops across South Dorset. They are as deadly as firearms and should be controlled in a similar manner."
